Crossing Guards
The School District of Onalaska employs crossing guards to assist students crossing busy roadways before and after school. Crossing Guards begin working on the first day of school and end on the last day of school. We currently have three locations where crossing guards are located:
- Irving Pertzsch Elementary: Main Street & 6th Avenue N, 7:45 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. & 2:50 p.m. - 3:50 p.m.
- Northern Hills Elementary: East Avenue & Troy Street, 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. & 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- Onalaska Middle School: Sand Lake Road & Quincy Street, 7:05 a.m. - 8:05 a.m. & 2:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
Some "tips" from our crossing guards to ensure safe crossing:
- Students using bicycles need to walk their bicycles when using the crosswalk.
- Students should wait to enter the crosswalk until the crossing guards give approval. Walking too early could put them in danger.
- For drivers and the general public: Please make sure to abide by the speed limit and refrain from distractions such as phone use when driving. Consider slowing down when nearing our crossing guard locations. We assist many students with crossing these busy roadways. Your compliance is important in creating the safest environment possible for our students.
